This one has no title at all. The concept of the story is actually pretty cool. I was playing with the Multiple Universe Theory mentioned in so many science fiction books: when an event with more than one possible outcome occurs, the universe splits into several pieces to compensate and allow for every possibility. In other words, there are tremendous numbers of universes out there, existing as completely different realities. This phenomenon is sometimes called "parallel universes," but as a wise man (probably Douglas Adams) once said: "It's like saying the sea is parallel; it has no meaning." Personally, I agree. And how can universes be parallel anyway? Especially when you consider that most geometric constructs don't exist...Oh, never mind.
The theory behind the universe in my story is thus: a spy in Japan in 1945 was trying to get a message to US President Truman. The message was that a group of brilliant, though low-profile, scientists was holding a secret conference in Hiroshima. In our universe, of course, an atomic bomb was dropped on that city; this is because the spy was killed before he returned to the States with his message. In this alternate universe, the message got through, Hiroshima was spared, and 1945 was the beginning of an age of peace and scientific discovery. The most important result was that the united governments of the world forged a world authority to keep peace and settle disputes. Yes, our universe has one too, we call it the United Nations. But this world authority has lots more power and essentially combines the governments of the world into one.
How does this effect TMNT? Well, the turtles mutated all right, down in the sewer....but unfortunately, due to some subtle changes in Japan that came about due to subtle changes caused by the bomb not being dropped (actually, bombS, since the bomb was not dropped on Nagasaki, either), Splinter was still in a cage in Japan eating rat pellets at this point. No Splinter, no Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The other significant difference was that the mutagen in this universe caused in the turtles X-men-like powers. ("Super-powers," some call them, or "mutant powers.")
This world's Michaelangelo was adopted by a middle class family and became Michael "Mac" McKenzie, an average kid who ended up becoming a cop. This world's Donatello was adopted by a fairly wealthy family and became Donald Trinkowsky. His undisputed brilliance earned him a couple PhDs, a really nice labratory, and quite a large sum of money. This world's Raphael ended up in an orphanage under the jurisdiction of a brutal, mutant-hating director. He gave himself the name Majicc. At age 16 he met the X-men and helped them send the director of the orphanage to prison for life. He decided to stay on at the Mansion as an X-men.
This world's Leonardo is perhaps the most fun to play with. He originally started out as DeathThroe, a renegade and borderline criminal, much like the Punisher. (In other words, he usually did his vigilante thing on the side of good, but had some definate nasty tendencies.) Over time, he evolved into the mortal equivelant of Satan. He is fond of guns, explosives, and maiming and killing lots of innocent people for no good reason. He is pure evil. His first criminal act was at age 16, when he blew up the west wing of a hospital, killing 13 and injuring hundreds more. Nasty kid. No one's sure quite how he was raised, or who raised him, but his childhood couldn't have been very pretty.
This character is fun because he is Leo's COMPLETE opposite. I mean, Leo has his failings, but he hates guns and is fixated on honor. I can't see Leo going berserk and blowing up hundreds of people, or laughing hysterically as he machine guns little kids. That's what makes DeathThroe funny. It's also a new way to play him off Raph, since Majicc is an X-men and spends most of his time stopping people like DeathThroe. And after Majicc discovered that he was DT's brother, he dedicated himself to hunting down DT and stopping him. They can't stand each other.
I can never decide if the TMNT should venture in the Majicc's world or if he should venture into the TMNT's world. But either way, this story fragment was a bad way to go about it. Good idea, bad writing. X-men fans, I do apologize. If you thought "Forever, Always Young" had the X-men portrayed badly, get a load of THIS. The X-men don't act like themselves at all. And the overall writing style is really crappy. Like, how can "unrecognizable figures" look like people? Sai. But here it is.
The Alternate Universe Story
The X-men were in the war room on that particular day. Only a few of them, actually. Cyclops, Jubilee, and Gambit were there, but Beast was in the physics lab, and the Professor, Jean Grey, Rouge, Storm, and Wolverine were in the Danger Room.
It was actually turning out to be a pretty normal day. Cyclops and Gambit were having a quiet conversation, and Jubilee was writing a report for Professor X. Suddenly, a funnel-shaped vortex appeared. It looked for all the world like a tornado, but then it stopped as suddenly as it had begun. The three could see two blurry, unrecognizable figures in the center, ones that looked like people. The three X-men just stared, as voices seemed to come from the figures.
"Come on, already! I knew you wouldn't be able to do this," came the first voice.
"Oh, shut your trap, 'lee," another voice said crossly. Slowly, two figures shimmered into place. One was a stranger with a green face....quite obiously a mutant. He was wearing a black bodysuit with a belt and a leg support and soft leather gloves and boots. He wore red sunglasses and neckerchief, and the "X" emblem on either shoulder.
The other mutant looked very much like an older, very attractive Jubilee, wearing the "X" emblem as well. Frankly, the three X-men were surprised. Cyclops reached for the button underneath the radio that would summon the others to the scene of the break-in.
"Wait a minute," said the older Jubilee. "Don't press that button yet. We don't want everybody rushing in here at arms." Cyclops hit the button anyway. "Well thanks for listening," the other Jubilee said dryly.
"We've got other problems, Jubilee," called the strange green figure. He was searching the room by using a remote device he had pulled from his belt. "I'm picking up some very odd readings. I'm being given reason to believe that we've been followed."
"So? We've got more trouble now!" The other X-men from around the mansion had joined them.
"Are we going to call the police?" asked Jubilee.
"No way, kid, that's not the way we operate," said Wolverine.
"Right, Wolverine. No need to get messy about it though." confirmed the Professor. "Mutants. Surrender your weapons." This made the green guy look decidedly nervous, and he looked at his companion.
"Cyclops said-" she began, but the other guy cut her off.
"Yeah, yeah, I know." He pulled out two guns and handed them over to Storm, who laid them on the table. She then looked at the device in his hand and nodded to it.
"That too," she said.
"No," he said back.
"Hey, pal, the lady said hand it over," snarled Wolverine.
The Professor held out his hand. "Mutant, please surrender the device. Only then can we begin to talk reasonably." Unhesitantly, the green mutant reached out his hand with the device in it and placed it in the Professor's hand. The Professor nodded. Then he looked at the other Jubilee, but she had no weapons to offer him. "I think we need you to answer some questions. Won't you have a seat?"
The two sat. The other X-men dropped into the seats around them.
"Speaking of questions, lets start with who you are and where you're from," said Cyclops.
The green one spoke up first. "I'm Majicc, and that's Jubilee."
"Wait a minute," said the young Jubilee. "I'm Jubilee, so you can't be from this time, which means you're-"
"The X-men of the future," finished Majicc.
"Wait. That's all there are of you?" asked Beast.
"Majicc, you're going about this in the wrong way," said the older Jubilee. "You see, there are more of us, but we just didn't bring them over yet."
"Honey, I don't think any of us know what you're talking about," stated Rouge.
"It's really very simple, Rouge," said the older Jubilee. Rouge looked faintly surprised that the older Jubilee knew her name, but did not interupt. "Here's the scoop. Like we said, we're from the future. But it's a different future from any one you could have."
"Huh?" said the young Jubilee.
"Listen," Majicc told her impatiently. "Whenever something happens wher there is more than one possible outcome, like a war, the sequence of time divides in two, and you have two different worlds. We're from one of the worlds opposite to this one. Get it?"
"I believe so," said Jean Grey.
"You were saying something about the others from your time?" asked Beast.
"Right. The X-men from our world are basically the same as the ones in this world. With a few new members," explained older Jubilee.
"Like me," said Majicc.
"One more thing," said Wolverine. "You also said you were from the future. About how far into the future?"
"Oh, about nine years," Majicc replied casually.
"So about how old would that make you and Jubilee?" asked Wolverine.
"I'm twenty-seven, and Majicc is twenty-five. And call me Lee."
"Makes things less confusing," explained Majicc.
"Okay. Now we know who everybody is, so we're all pally? This isn't logical. So we know who they are. Big deal. Everyone in the US knows who Jack the ripper is, but that doesn't mean that they'd let him stroll into their house." Jubilee said angrily.
"I sense no malicious intent, only good will," Jean said softly, laying a hand on Jubilee's shoulder. The Professor confirmed this, but Jubilee would not stop.
"If they are who they claim to be, then exactly what are they doing here? Why'd they vortex into the war room? Why not use the door, like everyone else?"
There was silence.
"I'm afraid Jubilee has raised a few good questions. Ones that deserve answers." Beast said quietly, calming Jubilee.
"We're decoys," Lee said abruptly. The other X-men looked confused.
"See?! I knew they sounded phony! Professor Xavior would never-" Jubilee said wildly.
"Wait," said Majicc. Jubilee paused. "Don't worry. Lee's just trying to be humorous. As usual." He shot a dirty look at Lee, who didn't even have the grace to look embarassed. "What she was trying to say is that the Professor from our time wasn't sure exactly what you would do if all of us suddenly appeared. The other X-men got to figuring, and they decided that it would be better to send us first."
"Why's that?" asked Beast.
"Well, for one thing, it would be safer to send only two of us because we weren't sure that we could trust the machine to carry all of us at once. And for another thing, you'd be less likely to attack just two of us. We decided that you'd feel more secure with thae odds at nine to two instead of twelve to nine, or something like that. The reason we didn't show up outside was because we thought taking the direct approach, which we did by just showing up in the mansion, would be better than arriving out on the street with all those people. You know, shock and fear.....possible police involvement.... Besides, if we showed up at your door and started explaining ourselves, you'd come to the logical conclusion that we're crazy, and your just about as likely to let crazy people in as you are to let in Jack the ripper."
"That still leaves out why you're here," said the Professor.
"I was just getting to that. For the last couple of years, the professor from our world has been building something called a frequency time-lapse portal. He's just perfected it."
"Wouldn't it be dangerous to have a machine by which people might access different times and travel to them?" asked the Professor.
"Yes. But the Professor decided that if such a device could be built, it would be better if the X-men had control over it." explained Majicc.
"But if the machine could be built once, it could be built again." pointed out Cyclops.
"That's where you're wrong. The FTLP needs a special component. It's power source is a crystal of which there is only one." said Lee.
"We are here on a simple mission. Something in our world has retriggered the mutant virus which the X-men dealt with nine years ago. We have "misplaced" Woverine's antibodies, the one's which allowed us to defeat the virus before, and Wolverine is currently somewhere in the Canadian wilderness, and cannot be reached. Our task is to come to this world, and retrieve some spare antibodies. There is one problem. As I first said when we arrived, the readings on this monitering communication device show that three people went through the portal, not just two." said Majicc.
That third person was DeathThroe. I had decided to let him loose in our world and see what kind of havoc he could wreak. Of course, it is not technically OUR world because the X-men and TMNT don't exist here. But the general political atmosphere, etc is much more similar to our world than to Majicc's world.
All that stuff aside...I'm not really sure where this story would've gone. The TMNT would have come in eventually, and Don and Mac as well. But after writing this pathetic garbage as a beginning, I didn't have the heart to finish. I've still got character bios tucked away, though. One day this story will return.
